Keeping to the system

Below is a great example of keep to a design system. Faber and Faber have taken the font B-HMMND, by cutting this in to sections, they where able to use certain segments of the letter forms to generate patterns for each of their genres.

Designing Type By Setting Rules

Trax is a headline font Nepomuk (Doris Freigofas, Sven Neitzel and Daniel Dolz) designed for a tour guide for the Berlin circle line. The characteristic style with the large serifs originates from profiles of grooved rails.

The poster series is screen printed on both sides, folded together each poster can be used as a brochure. By hanging the posters side by side you can literally lay tracks.

Trax is available in two styles: Trax Regular and Trax Ex. Trax Regular is distinguished by the characteristic bumps resulting from the grooved rail profile and Trax Ex is a more simple and modest version. Along comes a range of graphic symbols inspired by train signals inspired by train signals.

Luca Pacioli

Luca Pacioli (1445-1514 or 1517) was an Italian mathematician and Franciscan friar who lived during the Renaissance. While he was the chairman of mathematics in Milan, he collaborated with and taught mathematics to Leonardo da Vinci.

He published “De divina proportione,” in 1509. This book discussed topics including mathematical proportion, geometry, and architecture. Along with beautiful three-dimensional renderings by da Vinci, Pacioli included diagrams detailing the geometric construction of the Roman alphabet.

Pacioli was not the first or the last man in his era to describe the building of letters mathematically. Felice Feliciano did this before Pacioli, and Albrecht Dürer further developed these forms years after.

The above type face is designed by Mad-Type design studio. It is a revival/interpretation of a geometric display font based upon Luca Pacioli’s 1509 alphabet of “divine proportion.”

Re-evaluating current type faces

So far i’ve been using environments which have been personal in order to study and the correspondance of shape/object and space, but due to my continuous study in to the ‘Divine Proportion’ i have now felt it nessacary to to create my fonts from the best examples, of my chosen contexts.

By going to particular show rooms i was able to measure the ‘ultimate’ examples of particular spaces. The typefaces created from my visit should therefore better communicate/reflect the theory of (e8/Divine Proportion).

Type and its relation to the body

Specific parts of letters have, and are, explained by words assosiated to the human body.

In the illistration above Bains and Haslam show a letter form to have a face and shoulder, other sources have said that letters also have, arms, legs, feet and spines.

Although these words suggest somewhat different meanings related to typographic domain one can see how a letter form resembles that of a human body, and why such words are used when referencing the anatomy of type.

Such study is relevant to my investigation in to divine proportion. During my exploration in to this topic the body was given as example of the ‘perfect measurement’. Now when looking at type in this particular way one can begin to see how the letter form stems, the ‘divine’ proportions of the human body.

Divine Proportion

The divine proportion is a mathematical relationship. Familiar examples are often found it nature for e.g the sprials found in shells and the proportions the human form.

When looking at this simply , divine proportion explains the ‘ultimate example of measurement’. Below is a painting, the entire painting is a golden rectangle, this can be divided using simple rules, into smaller and smaller rectangles all of which correspond mathematically.

“Generative Typography” analyzes generative attempts for creating display typefaces.
Generative Design is a specific method for creating visual content, which completely differs from currently conventional “What You See Is What You Get” operations. The designer has to translate his imagination of the visual product into algorithms

Prise-en-Passant is a dynamic example of generative typography. Each character corresponds to a configuration of a chess game in a 8×8 grid.When you write some text, you can see the typography changing and destructuring itself depending to a game which is played in the underground
